The Guest Artist for July 2013 at the Waverly Street Gallery is Mary Eggers. “The Unfolding” is a series of paintings of the people of Bhutan, India and Nepal. In these paintings the artist conveys the beauty of the people and the flow of the fabric.

This series of paintings began in another world, when she took a spiritual journey to immerse herself in a Buddhist culture. Upon returning she began painting the people that she encountered as a way of weaving the experience deeper into the fabric of her own life. In India, when women shop for saris, yards of colorful fabric are literally thrown out in front of them so they can see how the folds will respond. In the poem “Like Passionate Lips,” the Sufi mystic Hafiz writes, “…the revolution of Existence’s skirt, whose folds contain other worlds…” Mary’s fascination with the folds of the fabric, or the faces, has grown as she has reflected on how exquisitely her own life continues to unfold.
