Waverly Street Gallery presents the works of Sculptor John Jayson Sonnier and Glassblower Jerry Hovanec. Both artists have long looked to nature for inspiration, capitalizing on the transformative properties of their respective media to depict the subtle qualities of nature -– be it the transparency of a leaf or the fluidity of a flower -- in stone or glass. Working independently and collaboratively, the artists present botanical sculpture where the interaction of stone and glass, translucency and transparency, line and color form a synergy expressive of nature’s creative force.
Sonnier has been a notable presence in the DC Metro area for almost 20 years. His work has been displayed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the U.S. Botanic Garden, the National Sculpture Society Annual Exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens, the National Agriculture Library, and Sculpture in the Park in Loveland, CO, the largest juried outdoor sculpture competition in the United States. Locally, he has created commissioned works for Holy Cross Hospital, National Institutes of Health, Montgomery County’s Downtown Silver Spring, and many private collections.
The collaborative process is represented in the exhibit not only in the joint work of Hovanec and Sonnier, but also in works with Hovanec's wife and daughter, creating glass sculpture that is truly a family collaboration. Hovanec has been working in glass for 30 years. His work can be found in the collections of the Chrysler Museum, the Renwick Gallery Permanent Collection, and the Museum of American Glass.
