Rachel Carren
The decorative effects of ornamentation and the innate harmony ofgeometry provide the foundation of my artistic exploration. My backgroundas an art historian inspired me to design color schemes after differenthistorical artists such as Hokusai, Jan Vermeer and Winslow Homer. I amfascinated by surface decoration. I work in polymer, a synthetic, fullspectrum modeling compound. Once sheeted, I add pattern using silkscreening, block printing or image transfers much as one might do withfabric. The contrast of surface complexity and simplicity of form allows meto craft jewelry that that is both distinctive and wearable.
My work has been acquired as part of the permanent collection at thePhiladelphia Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The RacineMuseum of Art, The Newark Museum and the Mingei InternationalMuseum.
