These bold “Abstract Landscapes” are vividly colorful, playfully expressive, and strikingly original compositions of varying sizes. Featured also are dreamlike, shimmering 3’ by 3’ color field paintings. There is also an extensive miniature landscape series of Block Island covering one wall. 

 

These abstractions grew out of observing light on objects in still lifes and landscapes.

Light falling on objects was always intensely magical for me: the way surfaces and the atmosphere morph, dissolve, become ephemeral; reconfigure…

​

and the juxtaposition of the palpable and the evanescent.

Fundamental, too, incipient, was my love of abstraction

​

In the abstractions, I used acrylic because of its viscosity, ease of making marks transparent, translucent and opaque - creating sticky pentimenti (layers of varying transparency). I also liked its quick drying and flexibility - it could be fluid or gluelike, depending on how much water I added.

Collage was born of playful experimentation and a sense of serendipity and adventure.

An observer who was feeling changed positively by looking at these pieces once told me that they are like Buddhist thangkas.

The small watercolors were all done on Block Island, in Long Island Sound. 

​

The landscape inspired me, as did the freshness of the medium, which was new to me. Sometimes I made them sitting on the road, which ensued various adventures.
